Today, more and more people are taking the time to go back to college (or even high school) once they have the time. They usually do this once their own children are in school, or even when they finally move out and leave the nest behind. Those that are going back to school have to be sure they remember all of their good, or even their bad, study habits so that they can make the most of their education. It can be harder to concentrate when you have to worry about everything else in your life. It’s not like high school when there are no kids or jobs to consider.
If you had bad study habits in high school, don’t worry, you can turn that all around. In fact, you may find that your experience throughout life has prepared you to handle things much more efficiently. Before you even begin, find out the average amount of work you are going to have to do at home, and how much general study time you may need. Then, think about how you can carve out the time that you need. Having a set amount of time is a great way to start with your new study habits.
You can make the most of your studies by having an area in your home that you use just for your school needs. You have to talk to your children at home and your spouse about your new study habits and what you hope they can do to help you out. Ask them to take messages when you get phone calls, and to try to do all they can for themselves without having to ask you for more help. Hopefully, you have a family that understands that your new study habits are important, and hopefully, they support you all the way.
Don’t, however, make your whole life about your studies. They are important, but you don’t want to alienate those that you love. If you think the work is going to be too overwhelming, think about taking part time classes at first, or putting it off for just a few more years. You won’t relax, and your study habits will suffer if you feel that your life around you is always in total chaos. Only take on what works for you and your family, but never forget your dream either. There are always ways that these things can be worked out so that everyone is happy.
Public education issues should be a central focus of the coming election!
A recent survey revealed that 73% of the American public believed the country was not going in the right direction. There were a number of factors listed as indicators as to what issues made this true. Public education issues were on the short list of issues the public felt needed vigorous attention from the incoming administration.
According to some organizations which measure academic achievement in educational programs around the world, the U.S. now ranks 23rd of 148 countries. Other studies show that fully 25% of the American public is functionally illiterate and the average high school graduate cannot balance a checkbook. In some areas of the country, high school dropouts number as high as 40%. We should all consider this a national disgrace.
Public education issues we face today are a cumulative lot, brought about by decades of downgrading the quality of public education. Teacher's salaries have not risen to be commensurate with the required skills or the current cost of living. Public school funding is being cut dramatically, resulting in fewer available classes and more students per classroom. Some public libraries have completely run out of funding and have been forced to close their doors. So what's to be done to address the many public education issues?
Perhaps one avenue lies in pressing the Presidential and other candidates, looking to be elected this fall, for a real and upfront plan to get our education back on track. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 has failed miserably. This 'teaching to the test' approach is no way to truly educate a child. What our public schools need is a massive influx of funding, to properly compensate teachers, reduce class sizes, open public libraries and restore a college preparatory curriculum.
Public education issues affect all of us. The current educational standards are inadequate to provide the background knowledge our children need in order to make intelligent and informed decisions, which is the backbone of a successful democracy. People who are poorly educated do not possess the knowledge or insight necessary to arrive at conclusions that help shape a better society for future generations. It may be argued that the downsizing of quality in education over the last decades has led us to our current state of affairs.
This democracy is supposed to be by, of and for the people. Maybe it's about time we spoke up, writing to our school board superintendents, congressional representatives and Presidential candidates, demanding that something substantial and significant be done to at least restore the college preparatory curriculum, as well as getting as many kids as possible into college. This country is rich enough to do all of this. The question is, do these public education issues matter enough to make it happen?
Things have changed greatly from when I was in high school and college. I was not introduced to anything having to do with computers until I was in my second year of college. My computer class consisted of learning how to code punch cards to inter information into a computer. It was slow and frustrating; it made no sense to me.
I worked in the library on campus to help pay for my expenses. I worked in two areas; government documents and periodicals. I would help the research librarians collect information on different topics. I would also teach freshmen how to write a research paper by explaining how to look up government documents as well as periodicals. The highest technology equipment we had was a microfiche reader. The students would look up certain broad topics and would be given a list of articles or government documents that were written about the topic. They then had to fill out a form to check the document or periodical out, for use in the library only. Research books, periodicals and documents could not leave the second floor research area. This always seemed a bit strange to me. It was like keeping the knowledge away from the general public and only making available to someone that happened upon it, and then for only a brief time.
Today I am sure that my children would think I am from outer space if I would explain how to write a research paper the way I learned. When I told my son that I specialized in government documents and that they were not allowed out of the library he thought I was making it up. He showed me the website where you can download any government document that you could possibly want. You can also read magazine and professional journal publications on line. The use of the periodicals was always my favorite tip to give freshmen when telling them how to write a research paper. I liked how current the information is in journals and magazines, especially the weekly magazines. Now news and information is available immediately there is no need to wait until the next addition of a magazine comes out, you simply need to go on line. The other day I saw my daughter’s most recent paper. The bibliography included the various websites that she had used in addition to her research materials from the library. I never thought that I would have to go back to school first myself to relearn how to write a research paper before I would be able to give them accurate information.
Does Your Child Have Learning Disabilities
Some children breeze through classes in school and never seem to have problems learning and getting good grades. Other children struggle a bit, but they can easily catch up when they have some outside help, or learn to have better study habits. There are some children, however, that seem to falter no matter what, and they are increasingly perplexed as to why they seem to have problems learning just about anything. Many times parents just assume their child is not that bright, but more often than not, the child has learning disabilities.
If your child is performing badly in school despite their best intentions and hard work, you can consider that they may have learning disabilities. Before you jump to that conclusion, you should make sure you rule out the simple things first. Some children have hearing and eyesight problems, but they don’t know it, or they don’t want to admit it because it might mean a hearing aid or glasses. Some children get help with those two issues and then go on to do just fine in school. Their only disabilities with learning were purely physical.
If a child truly has learning disabilities, there is help out there. Once it is decided that there might be a problem, someone should diagnose what that problem is. Once it is known, it will be easy enough to find the right program to help them out. Some common learning disabilities are dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, and even milder forms of autism that were not diagnoses earlier in life. There are programs for all of those disabilities, and many more for those that might be less common.
A child with learning disabilities probably has low self esteem due to their struggles. This is when parents need to step up and explain that they are not slow or stupid in any way, but that they have a different way of learning. Once they get into the groove of learning again in a way that works for them, their self esteem will improve. Until then, parental support is very important, and can mean the difference between the child making leaps and bounds in the right direction and struggling along as they were before. Looking up examples of famous or successful people who have learning disabilities can go a long way towards easing their minds about their condition. Once they see that they are not alone, and that disabilities with learning are more common than they thought, they will be better off in the long run.
The biggest problem with educational research is that there is simply too much of it out there. Education research, after all, is a requirement for anyone going to graduate school in education. This means that every highly qualified teacher has their own education philosophy and has done their own education studies. If you are at all familiar with the way things work in the public schools, you will know that every six months to three years, there is a new educational philosophy that comes through. Someone's research on education queues them in to a new approach to some core skill or knowledge base. All of a sudden, all the schools are catching on to a new way of writing a five paragraph thesis, a different method for teaching math, or even a new approach to reading education.
Sorting out the wheat from the chaff is no easy matter. Ultimately, educational research has to be put into place in the classroom. There are thousands of different ways to teach a class. No one way is necessarily correct for every given situation. It is the role of the teacher to try out different methods in his or her classroom and see which works the best for the students. It is results, after all, that matter. Philosophy is only of secondary importance.
Of course, researching education is extremely important for a teacher's professional development. Educational research is not always useful as a product, but it is always useful as an activity. The more you research education, the more you understand how the mind works. It is easy for teachers – even good teachers – to get stuck in a rut. They find an approach that works and don't innovate for years and years. By doing some educational research, they might suddenly get an idea. A teaching strategy that didn't strike them as old before will suddenly seem outdated.
Although not all of it is good, ultimately educational research is good for society. It is too easy for people to get stuck in ideas of how children should learn, how they should behave, and what works for them. Society always has values about how to teach the youth, but those values do not always keep up with scientific standards. Science, not cultural biases, should be our model in the schools. This is what educational research is so good for. Through it, little by little, society improves each generation as the students learn more effectively.
Forgive me if this sounds a bit harsh, but it often seems like the world is getting lazier. I can't tell you the number of students I knew back in college that never wanted to do their own work. I don't understand this. Sure, constructing essays and writing 10-page research papers can be a downer at times, but it's all part of the process. The learning process, that is. After all, college life generally only lasts for around four years. Unless you're striving for your PhD or a master's in something, you won't have to grapple with the work for long. The truth is you can make your assignments fun if you wish to.
For those of you who don't surf the web on a daily basis, virtually anything you can imagine is somewhere in cyberspace. You might have to look around a bit in order to pinpoint it, but it's there. Scholarly research papers are no exception to the rule. If you would like to review some successful samples to see how it's done, you won't have to browse long. Just to be clear, there's nothing wrong with reviewing online research papers. Some folks such as myself put them in cyberspace for this exact reason. They work as a sort of paradigm for folks who haven't a clue how to write one yet. We all have to start somewhere. Of course this doesn't mean that you should steal research papers off the web. I highly recommend that you don't. Anyone with the right software can tell if the work you turn in has already been used of published by someone else. Professors will gladly bust you in a heartbeat. It's certainly not worth damaging or ending your college career over.
Just to give you a few pointers in regards to research papers, this is how it works. We all have our own writing style. This is awesome. Otherwise reading would get boring. Everyone would sound the same. You generally begin with a topic and expand from there. Write down your topic. Inquire the number of pages that are expected and the number of sources you need. Create a basic outline, breaking down the research paper into paragraphs or sections. What do you wish to elaborate on in each section? Begin research papers with a strong introduction that lets the reader know what will be stated and/or proven throughout the piece. Think about keeping your topic fairly narrow so you can seriously focus your paper's direction. And finally, don't be afraid of second and third drafts. Often they're necessary.
For many college kids, federal student loans are absolutely essential. I was one of those kids. I came from a pretty poor background, and without a federal student loan I wouldn't have been able to get into college. Even better than the federal student loans, however, was the free federal scholarship. It is amazing how much money you can get for college if you have the right knowledge of the system. My parents were not really knowledgeable about such things, coming from rural Virginia. Nonetheless, I had an uncle who knew all about it. He pointed me in the direction of a number of college scholarships and, after applying for a few, I finally struck it rich. I wasn't able to get a full ride, but pretty nearly so.
There are many different student loan federal programs out there. It all really depends on your background, education, and opportunities. It is unwise, however, to limit yourself purely to federal student loans. A lot of times, the best loans actually are based locally. For example, someone who goes to a particular high school, strikes it rich, and tries to give back to the community might make a student college loan available to low income residents in a particular city. There are other student college loans set up for people from a particular race, ethnic background, or people interested in a certain area of study. Keep an eye out there. Federal student loans are definitely where to start looking, but they are not where to stop looking.
Of course, all of the advantages of federal student loans can turn to disadvantages pretty quickly if you don't repay them. Even federal loan repayments can be a pretty onerous burden on students after a while. This is why it is so crucial to get a good, high-paying job right out of college. Get the best thing that you can. You can always work a job that you enjoy more after you get ahead in your loan repayments. For first couple years, you need to just concentrate on putting your nose to the grindstone and working as hard as you can.
Fortunately, if you are having trouble paying your federal student loans back, you can often negotiate a deal. For example, if you study further, or if you are able to show demonstrable economic hardship, you can often get federal loan refinancing. It doesn't always work, but it is worth a try if you are in a dire situation.
When seeking to learn anything, we often turn to teachers of all types. While in school, we already have those assigned to us that can help us and guide us through the learning process. However, school only last so long, but learning should be a life time endeavor. That means once the high school and college years are behind us, we have to teach ourselves many things. Luckily, there are tools out there just for the purpose. This means that you want to find the student version of whatever it is that you wish to learn.
Probably one of the most common things that comes with a student version is the Bible. The Bible in its normal form can be hard to understand. Though there are versions out there that are meant to be easy to read, some prefer the more standard types so they can get meaning on their own without someone putting their own spin on it. The student version of the Bible does this to some extent, but the right one will guide someone through the Bible and will show them how to decipher what they are reading on their own terms.
There are also many types of student version learning books out there. These can be great for the person who wants to learn more about anything, but does not have the time or inclination to go to classes of any type. They can learn on their own this way in whatever spare time they can come up with. These student version books are also great for those wishing to home school their children, but realize that they are not the world’s best teachers. This allows them to refresh on things they may have forgotten while giving them great clues on how to guide their children through the material.

There may even be guides to things you may not have considered, and that can lead you in a new path and direction in your learning. Going to college can be a wonderful experience for anyone. This stepping-stone is especially exciting for those who've just graduated from high school. Multicultural Education
Nowadays, having a multicultural education is a necessity. Our world is larger and more complex than ever before, even as faster than light technology shrinks distances. Multiculturalism isn't just an ideology and belief system anymore. It is a way of approaching the world that encompasses everything. Multicultural educational resources include information on how to deal with foreign cultures, education about the basics of life in other countries, works of literature outside of the Western canon, and many other fascinating and useful bits of information.
When I first got into college, I wasn't really aware about multicultural education. I had had a pretty science-heavy and classics-light background. I was interested in pursuing scientific study, and didn't think that I needed multiculturalism education. As a matter of fact, the only reason I took a multiculturalism class was because it was a requirement. I'm glad I was required to take it, although I wasn't happy to at the time. I learned a lot, and it was quite an eye-opener.
The course really started me on the path to multicultural education. By studying the history of Southeast Asia – a region which I knew nothing about going into the class – I was able to see striking parallels in contrast with my own life. I had never really opened my eyes to life outside of the country I lived in, and the first look that I got was absolutely fascinating. It left me thirsty for more knowledge of other cultures and other ways of living.
That is why I decided to start my own to cultural education resource center. I live in a small Midwestern town which is a bit behind the times on matters such as multiculturalism. People here are very nice but they don't really know that much about the world around them. By educating them in multiculturalism, I am helping my community. A multicultural education doesn't only benefit minorities and members of other cultures, but the mainstream population as well. There are so many different ways of living and being in this world, and being deprived of all but one of them puts you at a disadvantage in this day and age. The more you know about differing philosophies and ideas, the better you are prepared to make your own decisions. Multicultural educations aren't a fluffy, vacuous things as some conservative pundits would have you believe. Instead, they are a solid set of fundamentals for someone living in the 21st century.
Most parents dream of their children going through school with high marks and conquering the world once they are done. Though many children do well, there are some that have struggles, and those struggles are never of their own doing. Some many have conditions like autism or Down’s Syndrome, and that means they need special education. Some others have smaller learning disabilities, or perhaps problems with speech, and that means parents want the best they can find for their children.

These can all be found in some schools, but are also out there in the community. Some insurance will pay for these and others will not, so make sure you find out before you start. If you aren’t sure where to find such special education opportunities for your child, talk with their doctor and they can guide you.
On the other side of the coin, there is always a need for teachers who specialize in special education. Regular teachers are always in need, and the ones that have special skills are even more in demand. While you may not get rich working in special education in a school, you will always have the satisfaction of helping a child be all they can be when they would have been passed over in the past. All children are special, and they all deserve a chance to shine. This is one way you can make a huge difference in the lives of some very special kids. That can be more rewarding than any amount of money.
Accurate Psychic Readings
When my new clients ask me if I provide accurate psychic readings, rather than reassure them that I have skills as a psychic, I ask them what they mean. This takes most people by surprise. Most people assume that the meaning of psychic reading accuracy is simple and fixed, but it isn't. Many psychic readers will say that their job is to foretell the future, but it isn't. The point of going in to see a psychic, just like the point of going in to see a therapist or any other sort of counselor, is to come up with guidelines on how to live your life and accept future experiences. The magic powers and startling predictions are just the icing on the cake.
You see, an authentic psychic reading is accurate, but the predictive accuracy is only one part of it. Anyone trained in psychology can tell basic facts about someone and what they want to hear by the way they talk, the questions they ask, and their mannerisms. This is called cold reading, and it isn't the same as having psychic power. Accurate psychic readings differ from cold reading in that they try to depend more on the spiritual vibrations of someone than that psychological makeup, and that they tend to be more influenced by concern over someone's future than by the desire to make money. Therefore, an accurate psychic reading will tell people enough about the future to convince them of the psychic ability of the fortuneteller and then dispense with some good advice. Contrary to what most people think, it is the good advice that matters, not to reading.

Accurate psychic readings are all well and good, but the fact is that occult power either works or it doesn't. Either way, accurate psychic readings are the beginning of the experience, not the end.
Of course, the opposite doesn't hold true. If a psychic reader is not accurate, you probably shouldn't trust them. Anyone who claims to be a psychic but doesn't have the ability to understand basic things about your life that you haven't told them is probably a fraud. Psychics can be unsure about certain things, but they shouldn't get willfully wrong answers. This is a good way to screen out people who you probably shouldn't let tell your fortune.
