I have always been an extremely cautious person. You see, it was instilled in me by my parents at a very young age. To say that they were not risk takers is probably the understatement of the year! As a matter of fact, they wouldn't even get in a car if they could avoid it. They were too afraid of crashes. They were perfect for each other – both extremely phobic and able to reinforce each other's fears and insecurities. Needless to say, for much my adult life I have been trying to overcome my upbringing. Up until recently, it did not seem to be working. That is why I decided to learn to snowboard.

Learning snowboarding might not seem like a big deal to a lot of people. After all, there are quite a few sports out there that are more extreme. In a world with hang gliding, skydiving, and things like that, deciding to learn to snowboard is a pretty tame move. Nonetheless, for me it was pretty radical. As a matter of fact, it was the most dangerous thing I had ever tried.

At first, I was afraid to learn to snowboard. I actually tried audio courses and learning snowboarding, videos that promised to show me tricks, and all kinds of other tools that allowed me to not have to stand up on the board. I was only putting off the inevitable. Sooner or later, if I wanted to learn to snowboard, I would have to just get up and do it. Last winter I decided to do just that. I went out to a ski lodge and signed up for snowboarding classes. I took a private snowboarding lesson, as well as several group classes. It was the thrill of my life!

In retrospect, it was silly for me to put off my decision to learn to snowboard for so long. Once I got up and did it, it was a lot of fun. Learning to snowboard is not half as hard as I had imagined, and once I had gone down the hill a couple times with nothing happening worse than a few falls, most of my fear was gone. Not only that, but it gave me more confidence in my day-to-day life. After all, you have to take risks now and then. Being afraid all the time doesn't really protect you. It only stops you from enjoying your life.

Finding the Best Golf Vacations

I enjoy playing eighteen holes whenever the opportunity arises and I love to travel to new places, so golf vacations are a favorite pastime of mine. However, coordinating the accommodations, rental car, and tee times on the course of my choice sometimes seemed as difficult as hitting a hole in one. At least that used to be the case, before I discovered the many advantages of booking golf vacations online with companies that specialize in these sorts of excursions.

There are certain features that I look for in a company that arranges these types of getaways. First, I want a price that is all-inclusive, so I am not surprised by any hidden charges when it's time to sign on the dotted line. I want to know about any taxes and surcharges that will be tacked onto the final cost, and I like to get a rundown on the course fees, including cart rental before I go. Golf vacations should also include guaranteed tee times, and I have found that most travel specialists will handle these details to a "tee"!

I have had a blast touring many parts of the country for my golf vacations, especially the southern states like Texas, Arizona, Florida, and South Carolina. Some of the other destinations that I hope to explore soon include Virginia and Nevada, where I have seen some gorgeous courses featured in travel brochures and websites I've perused.

Once I have completed my tour of golf vacations in the continental United States, it will be off to more exotic locations like Mexico and the Caribbean. And how will I get there? On a cruise ship of course! There are cruises that will allow you to play eighteen holes at some of the finest courses in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico, while you enjoy fine accommodations, dining, and entertainment every night. It's the perfect way to travel!

Golf vacations can vary greatly in the amount of time away -- from quick overnight jaunts to long, leisurely treks that include plenty of entertainment off the links. Accommodations can mean anything from a luxury hotel room to a four-bedroom condo, depending on my preferences and my budget. The great variety in golf vacations allows me to enjoy these trips as often as I can fit them into my schedule and budget.

Retirement may be all about spending leisurely days on the greens, but there is no reason why I can't enjoy a hefty dose of my favorite hobby right now. By booking my golf vacations online, I can enjoy eighteen holes in some of the most beautiful resorts in the world while I perfect my swing for those retirement years. Fore!

Are You Wearing The Right Athletic Shoes?

I remember hearing on the news that kids were mugging other kids for the single purpose of stealing their designer athletic shoes. I still don’t understand it, but I do understand the pressures of having the right clothing and not having enough money to buy what everyone else is wearing. Some will buy their shoes for athletics merely because they think the brand name will ensure that they are getting a great shoe, but that is not always the case. Price and brand name do not guarantee anything, so you should think a bit more about what you are going to buy when you are shopping around.

Fit is the most important aspect of buying the right athletic shoes. Though there are many great, and very expensive, types of shoes for athletics that will fit well, you should never dismiss the ones on the lower end of the spectrum. You obviously don’t want to spend ten dollars on a pair of sneakers when you are going to rely on them to support your feet while playing sports, but you do want to give all shoes a try. You may find that a less expensive brand of athletic shoes might be the best fit for you.

Athletic shoes should look good, but the support they offer is what is more important. If you have a shoe that is just to wide no matter how tightly you lace them, you are going to get hurt much more easily. A good fit means your foot is not sliding around in the shoe. If that happens, you are going to find that you can easily strain something, or you are going to twist your ankle. If you are really into sports, that would be a heartbreaking development to be sure.

When shopping for athletic shoes, always try them on, but you do have to do more than that. Walk in them, run in them, and do some foot motions that you may do in your particular sport of choice. That way, you can feel how the athletic shoes work with your feet and if they feel right. You cannot buy these shoes for athletics just by sight (unless replacing existing shoes with the same ones) and hope that they are going to be just what you need. Think about comfort and support, and then think about the look you want. Though looks are important, they should be the last consideration in this case.

I work at home on my computer, and that means I can set my own hours. I usually start after I have walked my daughter to school, and have had some time to have a few cups of coffee. I usually take a bit to look through some news sites online to see what is going on in the world before I get going. Most have rituals like this in the morning, even if they work in an office rather than from home like I do. One thing that I do before I really dive into work is to play some word games. I find that these seem to get my mind moving when I don’t have a lot of motivation to get cracking.

I think of word games as a warm up, much like when you stretch before exercising. It seems to get my mind moving on days when I don’t want to do much more than sit around and watch television. As we all know, that really doesn’t pay the bills. These word games have been a great way for me to shake the cobwebs and get my mind where it needs to be so that I can actually accomplish something rather than wandering around the house wondering why I can’t seem to get my mind on working.

If you don’t like word games, you can always play some that have to do with math and/or numbers. These probably work in the very same way. I’m not a numbers person, as I prefer to work with words, but I know many are the opposite of me. Playing a few short rounds of something to do with numbers that makes you think will have the same affect as the word games have for me. Not only can they get you thinking, they can help keep your mind sharp day after day. As we age, we all worry about that.

Work games can also be a great way for children to learn. My daughter recently told me that she isn’t learning anything in kindergarten, they just play all day. What she doesn’t realize is that she is learning, but she doesn’t know it because everything is fun for her. She is learning, and I can tell, and she’s learning quite a bit. She just has no idea that this is what is going on. As her reading and letter skills get better, I am going to find word games that she can play. I hope they have the same benefit for her that they seem to have for me.

Having good quality equipment for your sport is essential. This is particularly true with regard to racket games. In the case of badminton, the choice of badminton racket is all important. Every sports store carries a line of rackets that vary a lot in cost. The laws of the game dictate what is allowed in the size and design. The best quality makes weigh between 70 - 100 grams, without the strings.

As with tennis, the badminton player used to play with a wooden racket but modern materials made wood redundant. Players wanted a lighter badminton racket and the aluminum type was introduced. Nowadays, there are many different materials to select from, including Graphite Reinforced Plastic (carbon fiber composite.) some rackets are made from solid steel and inexpensive ones are still sometimes made from a light metal. In general, the rackets have become lighter and lighter. As for the shape, the oval head is still the most popular choice but the isometric head is gaining ground.

There is much debate on whether strings should be low or high tension. Professional players tend to use higher tension than recreational players. It's the general consensus that it should be left to individual choice, influenced by the skill and power of the player. It has been noted that playing with high tension strings can lead to injury.

The choice of grip for a racket is important too as the player needs to feel comfortable on the court. Again, there are a wide variety of materials on offer but the most popular is the polyurethane synthetic grips or the toweling ones. Perspiration on the hands can be a problem and many players wear sweatbands or apply a drying agent, either to the grip of the badminton racket or directly to the hand.

The development of equipment has a big influence on how a sport is played and this is in evidence with the badminton racket. The modern makes are so light that they enable players to employ a short hitting action on appropriate strokes. There is a lot of talk about fast serves in tennis but a shuttlecock will fly faster than a tennis ball and this is helped by light shuttlecocks and rackets. The official world record for a smash in badminton was recorded in 2005 when a player sent the shuttlecock at 206mph (332 km/h). There may even be a new wonder material waiting to be invented for the badminton racket that will make the game even faster at a future date.

Finding Old Atari Games

When I was a kid, my parents didn't have a lot of extra money to spend on toys and video games. I remember getting one or two gifts at Christmas and my birthday, but that was it. The rest of the year, I had to make do with hand-me-downs from siblings or cast-offs from friends. This seemed perfectly normal to me at the time; it's only when I look back with an adult's perspective that I realize how much my mom and dad really struggled to make ends meet.

Now that I'm on my own and making great money, a part of me can't help but feel nostalgic about all the things I wanted as a kid. That's why I've been treating myself to all the old Atari games that my parents could never afford to buy me back then. I don't even need to have the 2600 console to play all the famous titles like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Pitfall, Missile Command, Centipede, and of course, Pong. Instead, I'm able to find most of these old Atari games in free online flash versions that I can play anytime I want. Vintage titles are hot right now, so these types of websites are popping up all over the place.

In addition to free gaming websites, there are also sites that offer old Atari games as downloads that I can play on my computer (provided that I have the right emulator installed). Once again, most of the old Atari games that I want to play are completely free, so I'm not spending anything to satisfy my inner child here!

I do have to admit, however, that I've been looking into the possibility of buying the 2600 or 5200 console in the near future. Then I'd be able to buy old Atari game cartridges and play them on my television set, with a joystick and all. I've been looking at these items at different online stores, and am surprised at how many are available. For some reason, I thought they'd be harder to find, but I've had no trouble at all.

Moreover, these systems aren't as expensive as I expected. Depending on various factors, I've seen 2600 consoles priced at anywhere from $50-$200. Then, I can buy old Atari game cartridges for about $5 at these same places or on auction sites, and have the gaming experiences I never got to have as a kid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as much of an Xbox 360 enthusiast as the next person, and love all the incredible graphics and great features that modern gaming systems offer. But it's fun to occasionally kick back with a few old Atari games and remember the simpler times.
