Finding Ancestors

When I was growing up, I didn’t pay much attention to the PTA at my school. This stood for parent-teacher association, but most go with PTO, or parent teacher organization. Now that I have my own child in school, I realize what they can do for most schools. There have ...

Help Finding Ancestors

Building a family tree can be a lot of hard work, but it can also be very rewarding. I have done this from time to time, but I do find that I have to take a break from it now and again. What is really fun about this type of project is the interesting stories you come across when you are finding ancestors that go on your tree. One of my ancestors was executed in London a long time back, and the reasons were actually quite noble, if not misguided. You can bet that almost everyone is going to find some really interesting stories from some of their ancestors as well.

What makes finding ancestors hard at times is breaks in family lines, adoptions, and missing documents. When there are fires, very important papers can be lost. These might be birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage licenses. When these are lost, especially a hundred or more years ago, there were no copies. That can mean you have to search for a very long time before you can make connections in some parts of your family tree. Finding ancestors when records have been lost can sometimes be a losing proposition.

The Internet has made finding ancestors much easier, but it can come at a price. You can guess that you have found the right person with the right name, but you may have to make sure you have the right person by backing it up with documentation. What you may find is that paying the subscription fee at one of the many genealogy sites online is a great investment in your endeavor of finding ancestors. Most have documents and records that you could never find on your own, or that you would have to travel to dig up. You may not find everything you need, but you will get something about someone to help you move past a sticking point.

Don’t forget that finding ancestors sometimes means that you have to know how to use a search engine. You can find more than you can imagine by doing a simple search. There is a lot of history and many free genealogy sites that you can find through search by simply putting the name in question in to a search like Google. You may have to sift through a lot of pages, but this can be one way of making finding ancestors much easier and much quicker. Even better, if there are any interesting stories connected to your ancestor in your family tree, this might be how you find them.
