Getting Help From Dream Experts
Interpreting dreams is a pretty difficult art. On the one hand, you want to have some references to look at. Dream dictionaries and dream experts can be a great resources. On the other hand, you want to be sure to give your dream a personal interpretation. Just because a certain symbol has cultural significance does not mean that it means the same thing for you. When interpreting your own dreams, you have to really sit down and listen to yourself to get in touch with your own feelings. Only then will you be able to decipher the secret meanings of your dreams and fantasies.
The time I first consulted a dream expert was in college. I was actually going through some pretty serious psychological trouble at the time, and I thought that I needed some dream analysis. I was having disturbing nightmares every night, and it was affecting my schoolwork. If you don't sleep well you never study well since it is so difficult to concentrate. I did not want to get put on drugs as a solution – I knew that was only a temporary stopgap treatment. That is why I became interested in dream experts.
There are many different kinds of dream experts, and they practice many different kinds of dream analysis. Analyzing your dreams is an art more than a science. The dream experts I am most familiar with are psychologists, since that is what I have experience with.
Basically, it was a lot like the old stereotypes. The dream analyst had me lie down on the couch and talk to him about whatever I wanted. Technically, it didn't have to be dreams. Although he specialized in dreams, I can also talk to him about other things that were bothering me.
One of the interesting things that dream experts do is to help you sort through the details of your own dreams. They look at certain universal themes, but also ask you how you are experiencing them. For example, a dream about your teeth falling out is usually seen as a sign of anxiety over feelings of powerlessness. What this powerlessness means can vary, however. By listening to you talk about your own worries, experts on dreaming can get to the bottom of it and help you figure out what is making you feel powerless. This can take a long time and be a difficult process, but when it works it is definitely worth it. Anything for a good night of sleep!
