Today’s Wireless Communications
I remember quite clearly the day my friend asked me to go with her to buy a phone for her car. I asked her why she hadn’t considered getting a cellular phone. She had never heard of one, but thought that would be a much better idea than one that was contained within her car. Though cell phones were not new then, they were new to most people. Those phones and that service was very simple back then, and when compared to the wireless communications that we have today, technology is moving along at a very fast pace.
What you can accomplish via wireless communications today is a lot more than just five years ago. If you have a laptop computer in your home, there is no need to worry about hooking it up to your Internet connection. You can get wireless routers that hook you up with little effort. You can usually use your own Internet service within so many feet of your home with this as well. When you travel with your computer, you have some spots that offer free wireless communications. This is often called WiFi. You can usually find this in many hotels, cafes, and many book stores. Some communities have this in their downtown area for anyone who wants to use it.
Other wireless communications revolves around what the cellular phone of today can do. There are other means of this communication that are wireless, and these devices can do much of what a cell phone does, with perhaps a few more useful applications. This form of wireless communications now allows you to do almost everything that you can do on your home computer, at least as far as the Internet is concerned. You can check email, surf the Web, do online banking, and so much more, right from your personal cellular phone.
When it comes to wireless communications, the device you choose is important, but you should also consider the provider that you choose. You want one that offers you a wide coverage area for your wireless communications, as well as one that offers all of the latest phones and devices. You should think about price, and what is included in each contract, or if prepaid the way to go for you. Take time to consider your options so you know you are getting the very best that is out there. Just remember, things move quickly, so you may want to reevaluate each year.
Getting Verizon Wireless Ringtones
When ringtones first came out, most of them were monotone versions of popular songs. These were great for what they were worth, but they soon became outdated by poly and true tone ringtones. Most cellular companies now have ways to supply their customers with ringtones that they can use on their phones. The market is huge and they want the money. When you want to get Verizon Wireless ringtones, you have many different ways you can get them, and those with prepaid service can get them too.
You can get your Verizon Wireless ringtones by opening up your mobile phone. Not all models support this, but many of the new ones on the market do. You can go and look through the many different services have to offer, and then you download directly to your phone. This may take a bit longer than downloading to your computer, but you don’t have to take the time to then move the ringtone from Verizon Wireless from your computer to your phone. In a way, you are actually saving time when you get them this way. You may pay a bit more this way, but there are times when just trying it out can be free and the ringtone can be on the lower side of regular prices.
If you don’t want to do that, or if your phone won’t support that at this time, you can download Verizon Wireless ringtones straight from their web site. They offer a huge selection and all you have to do is to browse through and choose what you want. I am not sure if you can download them directly to your phone through the web site just yet, but that could be true now, or will be in the near future. You then do what you want with your Verizon Wireless ringtones.
In the past, those with prepaid service had a very hard time getting Verizon Wireless ringtones. Today, however, this is something that they can do. At this time those customers can not get the tones directly from the Verizon Wireless web site, but they can browse through selections on their phone and download directly. The only problem with these ringtones from Verizon Wireless is that they are more limited in selection than those that you can find online. However, there are many services from which to choose, and you are bound to find at least a few that are what you may be looking for in a ringtone.
Discovering Metal Art
Metal art is not only beautiful to look at, it is fun to make. Metal sculpture is something that people don't think about a lot, but almost everyone has elements of in their lives. Whether it is an artfully put together lamp, a piece of metal garden art such as a wrought iron fountain, or a precious keepsake in your house, there's probably some place where metal art is prominent.
I first became interested in the metal arts at a young age. We were actually doing wire sculpture as a school activity. Although today's litigious society would frown on a bunch of elementary school kids doing sculpture with wire – after all, you can poke yourself with wire – back then, it was a perfectly acceptable craft activity to do. Most of the kids found it frustrating, but I thought it was absolutely fascinating. I had a lot of fun making a metal giraffe out of wire, and was reluctant to put it down when the activity was over. As a matter of fact, I was so interested in metal art that my parents got me some more wires to work on sculpture at home.
Soon, I discovered that there were plenty of other metal arts that were within the abilities of a kid of my age. My parents trusted me more than perhaps they should have. I remember getting cut several times using tin snips to cut aluminum cans up. Nevertheless, I made quite a bit of metal wall art that year. I made little figurines that my parents could hang up around the house, as well as presents for my friends to give to them on their birthday parties. I was becoming so good, in fact, that my parents signed me up for metal art classes.
Most people frown on allowing little kids to weld, but my parents had bottomless faith in me and in the supervision of the art school. I'm glad they did. That welding class was one of the most interesting experiences of my life. Most metal artists nowadays use welding as at least one element in their art. Working with bronze and plaster casting is difficult, dangerous, slow, and expensive. Metal welding is a great modern alternative to this older and more involved method. Not only can welding be a metal art in itself, but it can be combined with other techniques to create more sophisticated pieces. I had never been so inspired by what I learned before then.
Tracking Devices
Up until recently, I assumed that tracking devices were the stuff of fantasy. After all, I was raised on cold war era movies like most of my generation was. The tracking device was something that James Bond would use to locate the villain. It seemed like such a high-tech apparatus at the time. In a time when computers were large and wimpy, spy devices were practically microscopic and extremely powerful. Obviously, it was hard to believe that such a thing was possible in my lifetime.
Nevertheless, nowadays GPS tracking devices are commonplace. There are many different ways to design a tracking device, and the different ones on the market all serve different purposes. One of the most popular types is the car tracker. One of the obvious advantages about putting tracking devices in cars is that you do not have to be that space efficient. A car thief is not going to inspect every inch of a car's mechanics to make sure that there is no tracking bug inside it. It would take far too long and almost guarantee that he or she was caught. As such, these cars with tracking anti theft devices tend to be recovered very quickly. The cops can see exactly where the car is and stop it before it can even be stripped.
Of course these types of tracking devices are not just for cops. They are also great for parents. Some of them are actually hidden, but many of them are overt. That way, anyone who gets in the car knows that their whereabouts are being tracked. This is a great way to keep an eye on your teenagers. Tracking teens used to involve phone calls to different people around the neighborhood. It was hit or miss at best. Nowadays, however, you can know exactly where your teen is when he or she borrows the car. This is great for parents who want to keep their kids out of trouble.
Of course, there are spy systems for more clandestine sorts of operations as well. A lot of people like to put tracking bugs in their houses, on valuable pieces of property, or even on the persons of suspicious spouses. If you suspect that someone is cheating on you, you can actually buy a tracking bug and hide it in his clothes. Although the legality of this process varies from state to state, the effectiveness is not up for debate. These devices are popular because they work.
One of my best friends practically swears by his radar detector. He has had it ever since high school. When he first bought it, it was a big deal. We were teenage boys, pretty driven by our testosterone. We liked to speed, but of course we didn't like to get caught. In the community that I grew up in, the cops were pretty suspicious of kids. If you were under 18 and driving, even if you were law-abiding, you could easily get pulled over for no reason and given a ticket. Radar detectors were not only a way to try to get away with speeding, but also a way to try to avoid cops altogether.
Still, I was skeptical that it would work. It was a pretty cutting-edge radar laser detector, and the reviews were good, but I couldn't believe that such a thing was possible. He had spent more than 300 dollars on it – a few months of saving for him at that time. It would blink and beep all the time, and it seemed like the warnings were so constant that it was almost pointless. Still, when he went three years without getting a single ticket despite his speeding, I thought I'd give it a chance myself. After all, what did I have to lose?
I bought myself a radar detector when I was going off to college. Radar detectors had gone up in quality and down in price, and I had a lot more money than I had had in high school. It was a pretty cutting-edge Cobra radar detector, and was also inconspicuous. I had checked out radar laws, and it seemed like I could get it in the county I lived in. I was a little worried that cops would be suspicious when they saw it, but I figured that the purpose of a radar detector was not to get pulled over in the first place.
I have got to tell you – that radar detector has worked wonders for me. Nowadays, I get where I'm going faster, but I never get pulled over by cops. Although radar detectors are no one hundred percent accurate, they are pretty good. Usually, if you're going to be radared by a cop, he will be checking someone else's speed before you get there. That will send a signal, one which your detector radar will pick up. You always have at least a minute or two to slow down. This is plenty of time to check your speed limit and make sure you don't get into trouble.
Technology Projects
In my opinion, science education in this country has really fallen behind the times. So much of our life is based on the Internet, and yet students seem to know so little about the way it works. Physical science is great, but technology projects are also an important part of classroom learning in this day and age. Learning about Internet technology will not only prepare your students for being citizens of an information technology society, but it will also help them develop the passion for high-tech that will lead to improvements in technology in the future.
There are many different ways to approach technology projects. Basically, it usually comes down to software versus hardware. Typically, a hardware-based technology project is better for younger learners. It is nice to teach them the fundamentals of electricity while they are still young. Showing them the basics of how a circuit works can demystify some of the stuff that goes on in the computer. With older students, however, you might want to use an approach that involves programming as opposed to actually wiring circuits. Most of the high-tech jobs, after all, have more to do with understanding the way the software works than with understanding the hardware. As a matter of fact, you can be a programmer with very little knowledge of electrical engineering.
One of my favorite technology projects is simply demonstrating how electricity is generated. Building an electric generator is great because kids never bother to think about where their electricity comes from. To them, the idea that electricity is generated is almost as strange as thinking that water is generated. Yet when I run a magnet through a coil and they get to watch the needle swing, they are always mystified by it. To them it is positively fascinating that you can create this mysterious electrical force just by passing a magnetic field through a coil.
When you're dealing with technology projects, you have to make sure not to make them too special-effects heavy. Don't worry about entertaining your kids. Instead, worry about teaching them how to program. If they want to see graphics, let them make their own flash animations. If they want to see video games, let them program their own video games. If they get to play with fancy graphics and high- tech games from the very get-go, they will never learn how things work. Instead, they will play around endlessly.
You might not believe it if you grew up in the city, but those of us who have access to tree ripe fruit can tell it from fruit that has been picked only a few hours before. There's nothing like being able to go out to fruit trees and grab a fresh apple, pear, or orange off the branch. When I went back to my grandparents farm where I grew up, I realized that, with all of the luxuries of modern life, we still have not come up with anything as wonderful as a fruit tree. The tree fruit might not be available in all seasons, and might be subject to worms, bugs, droughts, and other pests, but when it is there it is the most delicious, refreshing thing on earth.
The only problem with fruit trees is that if you don't grow up with them, you probably won't get to have them either. Although there are fast growing fruit trees, a lot of species take longer. In order for your fruit tree to bear fruit, it needs to have other ones nearby so that they can cross-pollinate. Otherwise, they will be infertile. If there are problems with the soil, too much or too little water, or if you have the wrong variety, you will not get fruit either. Basically, so many things can go wrong that it is surprising that more people don't give up on growing fruit trees. Nevertheless, when it does work it is worth it!
One of my friends is an expert in grafted fruit trees, and he has been showing me their wonders for the past month or so. Fruit grafting is something that I never experienced growing up. My grandparents were pretty simple and straightforward about planting. They had a few varieties that they liked, and they grew those over and over again. It was definitely good enough for them, but it wasn't good enough for my friend.
He always loves fiddling around and experimenting, and he is no different when he gets his hands on some plants. He has now made an apple tree that can actually produce six different varieties of apple! Talk about luxurious! It is the best solution for someone with limited space who still wants to enjoy a wide variety of different fruits. The “Frankentree”, as I refer to it, is one of the best fruit trees I have ever seen. I don't know how he does it, but he sure does it well!
