Shopping for a new car? When you compare autos, consider these five criteria

When you go looking for a car today, what you want in a car may be different than what you wanted just a few years ago. For one thing, the price of gas is a major concern. We all want a car that doesn't guzzle gas like there's no tomorrow. That said, the other features we want in a new or used car should be re-prioritized. Five years ago, you may have preferred a large automobile simply for good looks or the added comfort a large car affords. The larger cars give you comfort, but today's gas prices may no longer justify this desire. 1.Gas mileage is certainly important for all car buyers, but in some situations, this may not be the number one criteria. If you don't drive much, or have a second vehicle, or need a pickup for runs to the dump, you'll probably compare autos for sale with emphasis on other factors.

2.Comparing cars on the basis of safety records may be your top priority. You'll want to take a look at consumer reports on autos. A recent safety report showed that one small foreign car proved to be one of the safest across all currently manufactured cars of all sizes! So a larger car doesn't necessarily mean it's the safest.

3.The price you pay for your next vehicle is determined by your budget. You don't want to overextend yourself, but at the same time, when you compare autos you might like, paying a little more for a reliable vehicle saves you money in the long run. Look up the Kelly Blue Book(TM) value and do not pay more! You'll often find the best deals from private parties over a car lot. On the other hand, a car lot may give you a good trade-in, resulting in a better overall deal.

4.This brings us to the condition and reliability of the car you have in mind. No matter who the seller is, it's always worthwhile to have the vehicle checked out by an independent mechanic before you purchase the car. If the seller refuses this condition of the sale, you should pass on the deal. On the other hand, if the car checks out and all you need is a couple of new tires, you may have found a good deal.

5.One criteria, often neglected when comparing autos, is maintenance requirements. That fancy little British sports car you have your eye on, may be in mint condition and offered at a good price. What you may not realize is this sharp looking car may spend more time in the shop than being driven. Again, check consumer reports!
