Does the U.S. need to revamp its social welfare policy?

Not too many years ago, most Americans felt that social welfare programs, paid for with their tax dollars, were much too liberal, encouraging people to be lazy, not work and simply skate along, living off government funding. True, there were such individuals who took advantage of the generous social welfare policy of the time. However, the vast majority of people receiving the benefits of the social welfare policy programs, would rather not to have found themselves in this situation.

Most people want to work and earn a living. It's a matter of dignity and being able to feel like productive members of society. However, in the last ten years, these social programs have been cut to the bone, with the result that homelessness has increased, right along with despair and hopelessness. There are families living with their children in the family car! This is a sad state of affairs in a country as rich as America.

Today, many people live in fear of being laid off from jobs they've held for years. Employers find it expedient to outsource these people's work to foreign countries, where the labor is performed far more cheaply.

Now we also find that people who bought their first home a few years ago are now faced with foreclosure and possibly, homelessness. We know know that many mortgage lenders urged these home loan applicants to misstate their income in order to qualify. What happens to these people? There is no social welfare policy to help in a situation like this.

Every day, we hear of laid-off workers, particularly in 'blue-collar' jobs. Maybe your neighbor has worked all his life in an auto factory and has no other marketable skills. The current social welfare policies do not include retraining programs to get that family back to a productive state.

If that family ends up receiving welfare from the state, they may well be doomed to a life of poverty. The amount of aid they are qualified to receive will simply not make ends meet. Jobs are scarce enough, but our auto worker is unlikely to find a job that will feed his family. Without a social welfare policy that includes education, he may never get back on his feet.

The social implications are frightening. Poverty increases the incidence of divorce, suicide, crime, drug abuse and a host of other such undesirable events.

Our government sponsored a highly successful work program, back in the 1970s. Unskilled, unemployed people received on the job training for a one-year period. The employer was only required to pay $1 per hour, while the government made up the difference to a minimum wage level. Many people learned a trade. Teach a man to fish ...

Perhaps it's time to re-examine our priorities and draw up a charter for a revamped social welfare policy that supports all of our citizens, such that these tragedies do not occur.

Statue Of Liberty

Almost everyone knows about the Statue of Liberty, and many of us have learned a few facts about its construction and origin. Even so, you really can't grasp it until you see it up close. Although hundreds of statues of liberty are sold at gift shops and souvenir stands all over New York every day, not all of the people who buy them have actually been inside that statue. Once you are, you can really understand the immensity of it. It is absolutely huge. We have our own colossus in this country – one of the most tremendous and awe-inspiring statues ever made – and we completely take it for granted.

The Statue of Liberty, of course, was not something that our ancestors could take for granted. When my grandparents came over to Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty was, I'm sure, one of the first things they saw. It was like a beacon of freedom shining on them, welcoming them to the land of opportunity. Times have changed since then, of course, but if we want to be good Americans, we have to preserve the essence of what has made our country great. We have to keep our doors open to immigrants, and preserve a tradition of acceptance. No matter what our government does, the Statue of Liberty will be there as a reminder to us about what America is supposed to stand for.

I personally think that every school child in the country should go and see the Statue of Liberty up close. Of course, they should not take a trip to New York for the sole purpose of seeing the statue. While they're there, they might as well see the other important cultural sites. Time Square, Central Park, and many other attractions are there to delight visitors to New York, whether they are young or old. Yet none of them symbolize freedom like the liberty statue does. It is not just a monument for New York, but for the whole country.

Perhaps Statue of Liberty tours should not start out on Ellis Island. Perhaps they should actually start out in the water. I sort of think that is how the Statue of Liberty was meant to be seen anyway. The immigrant experience in America is the truest experience. It is something that almost all of us share in our history, and something we would do well to remember. Seeing this impressive national landmark is just one way that we can remind ourselves what our country is all about.

How To Find Homework Help

If you have school age children, you may hear one complaint over and over again. Homework is piling up and many have to do hours of it after school. If you have a child that is very bright, they may not care about it, and will get it done very quickly. Most children, however, have a problem at some point, and some have great struggles. This might mean they are spending all of their free time on homework. This can make learning seem like a chore, and that is not a good thing. When this happens, parents need to help children find a good source of homework help.

Sometimes, parents are a great source of help. I know that my husband and I had completely opposite strengths in high school, and that might mean that between the two of us, we can offer most of the homework help that our daughter might need in the future. This is not the case with all families, and sometimes time is just too limited. That is when outside homework help is a great idea. Sometimes, help with homework outside the home is the only option. There are many places you can find it, and each family has to decide which works best for them.

Tutors are excellent for homework help. Some schools have students that volunteer to do this, so asking at your child’s school is a good first move. If you can’t find anyone there, you should check with your local college, if you have one. There are often students who will tutor younger children to make some extra money while they are studying. You can get some great help at a great price this way. You can even find listings in your local paper for those who can come into your home to offer homework help to your children.

There are some cases when tutors are not enough. Some children have learning disabilities that might not yet be diagnosed. There are some special programs out there for homework help that can make learning easier for such children. Some are programs parents can order and do with their children on their own. There are also learning centers that help students will all aspects of learning and learning problems. You may not have this type of homework help in your community, but you may be surprised to see what you can find just by looking around.

The Social Groups In Your Life

Perhaps the biggest problem with social groups is when they are limiting to people as they grow. Some see the issue of these groups as a world wide problem, with larger groups of people being the problem. That is very true, and many of the problems we face on a global level have everything to do with these groups. If you think of it in your own life though, the definition of these are a bit different, but they can have the same affect on your life if that is what you allow to happen.

The time when local social groups are going to mean the most is in high school. Teenagers are learning about who they are and where they fit it in within the world around them. This can lead to problems. Social groups within schools can be very exclusive and very rough. Image is everything at this age because teens don’t know enough about themselves to distinguish themselves in any other way. That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them, that is just how it is at that age. Some excel in these social climates and others have a horrible time.

The good news is that these social groups become less important as a child moves on to college. They know more about who they are, and with that, they grow to be more curious and tolerant of those that they would have never spoken to in high school. As college begins, some stick to old high school habits and ideas about social groups, but that does not usually stick for long. Soon, none of those things matter, and budding adults begin to choose friends because of compatibility and common interests rather than just looks or labels.

Though these social groups will play a role in any life from time to time, things get better as we age. Our groups take on whole new meanings, and we rarely have a hard time admitting someone into our circle of friends if they share our values and our interests. It doesn’t matter who they look like, where they came from, or if we would have liked them years before. Social groups are no long as exclusive, and more encompassing of who we really are as people and what we want out of life. A good life includes those that make us feel good, and those people can come from any where at any time.

Civil Rights

When most people think about civil rights, they picture a struggle that happened in the past. Everyone is familiar with the civil rights movement in the United States. Through the leadership of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and many others, as well as the tireless work of thousands upon thousands of people, blacks were, for the first time in American history, able to get equal rights. They received the right to vote, the right to eat at white owned restaurants and use the same facilities and, perhaps most importantly, the right to integrated schooling.

What many people don't understand is that the struggle for equal rights goes on. There are many communities in this country that do not always receive adequate civil rights protections. As a matter of fact, practically every minority community suffers from this to some degree. African Americans have been increasingly troubled by the problems of racial profiling. Police officers will often selectively pull over and harassed motorists based on their race. Civil rights lawyers are there to protect people who have been unfairly selected for police harassment.

Even more striking is the persecution of those groups that have never been protected by any sort of civil rights act. Homosexuals in this country are still persecuted in many different states. In addition to not being allowed to marry as they choose, they often are given no legal protection against unfair firing based on their sexual orientation. They are not allowed to join the army unless they are secretive about their sexual identity, and face routine discrimination in many public places.

Fortunately, civil rights law is alive and well in this country. We have a fine tradition of lawyers out there fighting for equal rights for all people. As long as women still face a glass ceiling, African Americans are still harassed by police and robbed of their votes, and homosexuals are still denied the right to marry, there will be a body of civil rights professionals working to change things. A lot of people think that the struggles take place in some high, elevated realm, but they don't. They start with ordinary people like you and me. If you think that your right has been violated, you should contact a lawyer and see what your options are. You might make things better, not just for yourself but for your whole society. Sometimes all it takes is one voice.

Active Adult Communities Offer Fun and Amenities

Retirement is a marvelous time of life, and active adult communities provide retirees with the opportunity to socialize with like-minded folks. As I am approaching my retirement years, my thoughts are turning to just these types of neighborhoods. But how do I choose the best one?

My search first took me online to check out the most desirable areas of the country to retire to. However, I found that my hunt didn't have to be limited to the continental United States, since there are some lovely active adult communities in more exotic locations like Mexico and Hawaii. And if I did want to stay within the boundaries of my home state, there are neighborhoods available that cater specifically to the retirement crowd. It's great to be able to shop for the perfect community in any location around the globe right from the comfort of home.

One of the most popular types of active adult communities is the golf course community. These areas are usually set in pristine surroundings with lush green fairways and even wildlife in some areas. The golf course community is most often found in the warmer states of the south, but a few northern states have some lovely choices as well.

Another attractive feature of many active adult communities is the selection of maintenance-free homes. Let's face it: the retirement years are not the time to be pushing a lawnmower around, so I want a place where someone else will do the labor for me. The price of these services is generally included in the homeowners' fees for the community.

Most retirees also want to live in an area that offers plenty of choices in terms of entertainment and activities since the years after a busy career are the time to sit back and enjoy. Many neighborhoods will offer their share of amenities like pools, clubhouses, and shopping centers to keep everyone busy doing the activities they love most.

One of the things I am looking forward to most about retirement is eating out regularly, so I am searching for active adult communities that will be surrounded by plenty of fantastic restaurants. Searching for neighborhoods online will allow me to easily identify locations that meet all the criteria I've talked about here.

Retirement is a lovely time to sit back and smell the roses, linger over a leisurely cup of coffee any morning of the week, and indulge in activities that you love. The right active adult communities can help you enjoy the retirement of your dreams, so get out there and find your new home now!

Find a Lost Friend

We lose many things in our lives, but some of the hardest things are old friendships. There are a hundred reasons why we drift apart or lose each other, and each is valid in its own way. Many times, life happens and before we know it, someone we care about is gone from our reach. That is perhaps why there are so many people that log on to the Internet in hopes of finding a lost friend that used to mean a lot to them. Many find who they are looking for, but they are not always happy with what happens after that.

I chose to search for a lost friend who was my best friend through high school. I found her, right where she said she was going to be. She went into the Army, and was still there when I located her. She was not on active duty, but instead, enjoying the warm weather in Hawaii. I was so excited to find her, and she was excited to hear from me, but things took a strange twist. We found that too much time had passed and that we had nothing in common but our memories. Those memories are great, but they did not make for a good foundation for a friendship now that our lives are so different.

You won’t know how your reconnection will go until you try it though. Some friendships pick up where they left off and are better than ever. Finding a lost friend can be complicated, but if you know a lot about them you may not have a hard time. Look for them online by searching their name in search engines, social networking sites, professional networking sites, and though different web sites built for finding a lost friend, colleague, or anyone else for that matter. These can be very helpful.

You may have better luck finding a lost buddy if you had a lot of mutual friends. You can always ask them if they have any information on your friend or if they know how to reach them. You can look through your address book to see if you have an address for parents or other relatives that may also want to help you. Think about things like classmate reunion sites as well, and any other possible way that you could locate your lost friend. Who knows? They may be looking for you as well.

Finding Community Service Ideas

Even the best behaved people can make a boo-boo now and again. A small boo-boo may land you a slap on the wrist, and perhaps some community service. This is something that most think of as a punishment for some small crimes, but there are people who look for community service ideas because they want to make a difference and volunteer their time for others. If you are of the first group, you may be assigned something. Those that want to volunteer may have to find their own ideas on their own time.

There are many great community service ideas out there, but what you find will greatly depend on where you live. Different things are needed in different areas, and the needs in urban areas may be a bit different than what smaller areas need. You know your own community, so you may already have some good community service ideas in mind when you decide that you would like to volunteer some of your time. As long as you are doing something to help make someone’s life easier or more beautiful, you have found something to do.

Some good community service ideas might revolve around education. If your school accepts volunteers, this is a great place to give your time. You will have to go through the same criminal checks as teachers and other school employees, but once you do, there are many great things you can do. You may be a teacher’s aide, or you may work with children who need a bit more help getting through their classes. You can even think about volunteering to help adults who can’t read, or those that need to study for GED or their college exams.

Other community service ideas that many people like to take on involve the beauty of the area in which they live. They may volunteer to clean up trash in the area, in parks, and along the roads. They may also volunteer to do things that are needed like painting the play equipment at the local park, or taking part in fundraisers that can help with other community upgrades. No matter what you think you would be good at, there are always some great ideas for community service out there. All you have to do is ask around. You could call your local government officials to see if they have ideas for you, or you can call your local school district to see if they may need you for anything. Don’t forget the local animal shelters as well.

Baseball jerseys

Finding baseball jerseys is usually a somewhat easy task. Of course, if you’re looking for a jersey when your team has already made it to the playoffs or the World Series can be a lot more difficult once everyone jumps on the bandwagon and starts buying them. What has always amazed me about jerseys for any sport, is the cost. If you walk into a sporting good store to buy a baseball jersey, be prepared to spend a nice sum of money. Why they can’t be a little more affordable remains a mystery.

People love to get baseball jerseys for their favorite players. With as often as some players change teams, purchasing baseball jerseys may be something you need to do at the start of each new season. If you are looking to save money when buying baseball jerseys, your best bet may be to purchase online. Ebay may have some great deals for you, though some of them may have already been worn. Of course, some ebay stores are selling brand new baseball jerseys and you’ll still end up spending quite a bit of money plus shipping. Buying directly from sport sites can cost you even more money than the stores or ebay. If you want to pay the most money however, buy them in the baseball stadium if you manage to get to a game. For the amount of money that you’ll spend there, you’d expect them to all be autographed or have been worn by the players. Instead, you’re simply paying for the excitement of actually purchasing your baseball jersey in the same stadium in which your favorite player is in at the exact same time.

Of course, when you go to watch a baseball game at a bar or a friend’s house, you have to wear your jersey. Somehow, it just makes cheering a bit more exciting and you look more dedicated to the game. Plus, when everyone else is wearing baseball jerseys, you have to fit in. When you see someone walk in with a baseball jersey of the opposite team, you automatically view them as the enemy and spend the evening glaring at each other. It is quite interesting what kind of drama baseball jerseys can provide. Not to mention the fact that you don’t want to be wearing a baseball jersey for someone who is having a terrible season. That’s just grounds for harassment and jokes throughout any event in which you’re wearing the player’s jersey. If that happened, the small fortune that you spent to purchase the baseball jersey would have been for nothing.
