Driving Safety

Driving is something that I enjoy, as long as I am looking forward to the destination. I’m not always thrilled, but I certainly don’t loathe it. Most that say they don’t like it either have to drive a lot, or they are just not comfortable behind the wheel of ...

Teaching Teens Driving Safety

Most parents groan when they realize it is time to let their children learn to drive. They worry about many things, but the most pressing concern is the safety of their teenager. It is a fact that teens are not as fearful of driving as they should be, and that many die in car accidents for reasons that most adults think are trivial. They may be distracted by friends in the car, talk or text with their cell phones, or they may simply misjudge some speeds and turns that are judgment calls. Your teenagers will learn about driving safety while in school, but parents are the most valuable resource in making sure the children remain safe and alive.

Most of the tips teenagers learn about driving safety come from watching their parents over the years. If you speed a lot, you can safely guess that your teenager will see this as something that is quite normal, and they are going to do it too. If you routinely forget to use your turning signal, or you run a lot of red lights, they are not going to follow those rules very often. Your bad habits when behind the wheel are going to compromise the driving safety lessons that they are going to be getting in school.

Another aspect to driving safety is learning how to be a defensive driver rather than an aggressive one. This is one of the biggest problems that most face when they are on the highway. Aggressive drivers have very little concern for those around them on the roads, and this can lead to accidents very easily. This type of driving can lead to problems for your teenager. Some have little patience with aggressive drivers, and even when they tend to be defensive, they may forget that. Those who practice good driving safety learn to control that urge and remain calm.

Driving safety taught in schools is something that can be rather extensive, but some schools can’t give as much time or money due to tight budgets. Find out exactly what your teen is going to get in regards to learning safe driving skills. If it isn’t much, you should make sure you cover the full range of topics, even if it proves to be a little frustrating to you. A little extra time and effort to explain what driving safety really means can be the difference between a great driver and a horrible accident.
